It's the stuff of fantasy. My personal belief is that those who label themselves "non-binary" are actually quite insecure & they feel invisible and think it makes them sound more interesting. It's the same as those people who believe alcohol gives them a personality.

I agree about young teenagers but often the adults are narcissists.

Great piece Andrew. Made me laugh and there aren’t many opportunities for that these days.

Many are. Narcissists are very insecure ppl though. My sister was married to a malignant narcissist and in spite of the bravado he projects the reality is he actually feels incredibly inadequate.

They are really fascinating. It's a mental disorder but because they are convinced there's nothing wrong with them, they won't seek therapy.

"Coming out as non-binary, a fashionable and celebrated identity, bears no such risks."

Hopefully, we will see that coming out as non-binary bears an increased risk of ridicule and becomes a comedy go to. As I've said before, there's comedy gold in they them there hills.

Had to look up the word "truckle" and wondered why Andrew had mentioned a small barrel-shaped cheese, especially Cheddar. Then realised it was the verb to submit or behave obsequiously.

Most enjoyable read as ever, Andrew, but I disagree that one couldn't hope to assess where someone falls on the spectrum of mods to rockers. Surely a candidate could be placed in an MRI machine while being made to listen to music popular in both communities and the degree to which pleasure centers in the brain light up could be measured?

When I complained to the BBC that their use of the term “non-binary” showed they had been captured by gender ideology, I was told that it was “widely used” and had been “defined by the government”. They provided a link to the 2018 consultation paper on reform of the Gender Recognition Act, which does indeed provide a government definition. Apparently “the government defines a non-binary person as someone who identifies as in some way outside of the man-woman binary”. If that’s a definition, then I’m a 1952 Fender Esquire. For those unaware, that’s a guitar. It’s not a man or a woman. So if I “identify” as one, then I’m clearly non-binary. I think that’s a circular argument rather than a definition. People can call themselves what they like and I accept that a lot of people call themselves non-binary, but there really is no such thing until someone proves otherwise.

Saying you are "NB" just reinforces the binary in my opinion. But hey, Im just an old fashioned gay guy.

We're ALL non-binary in as much as nobody in western society completely conforms to society's notions of masculinity and femininity. Unless you're in Afghanistan in which case those rules about how women and men should behave are imposed by law and sanctions for not abiding by the sexual divide are extreme.

If non-binary exists then it's innate in all of us, none of us are 100% masculine or feminine. If it applies to everyone, it's meaningless as a label.

It's dangerous because it teaches kids going through puberty, when identity is necessarily fluid, that they have to choose a label, rather than go through the natural process of discovering oneself.

What makes that even worse is that non binary, like all these identities, is really a political label, making an avatar of a complex being. This is easy to observe in the ideological language employed, most notably "trans joy".

The harm this movement has done is incalculable.

Countries like Russia and China must be delighted to see that Governments in the West have essentially given up trying to solve real issues that directly affect their citizens' live and instead are concerned with elevating concepts like Non-Binary to a status that defies any logic.

I am so pleased to see Andrew has written about non-binary because I have been meaning to say something about it for weeks, ever since the usually sensible Daily Telegraph started writing about "the binary actress", or "who is binary". Now I do not need to write anything because Andrew has said it all, but I suppose there is still a gap for me to write a letter of reproach to the newspaper for indulging this narcissistic fantasy. The downside is that they never publish my letters!

Thanks, Andrew

I never could get my head around it. You ( the person with blue hair) accept there is a binary but you say you are non-binary. But that can't be possible because there is a binary...and so on...

"I'm them"

"What them over there"

'No I'm them"

My sympathy is with the confused, impressionable kids who see that people like Danni Minogue and Shobna Gulati are identifying as non-binary and follow their lead. Then that leaves them vulnerable to more damaging kinds of gender nonsense including medicalisation. In my view the biggest damage of all comes from telling kids that they are victims and that the whole world wants to kill them for ‘being who they want to be’.

I noticed watching tv shows or movies even from just 2-3 years ago they were all desperate to shoe horn in a non-binary or trans character. "A Man Called Otto" and "The Diplomat" spring to mind. Now suddenly they are over that. Back to gay characters I guess.
